Fort Hartsuff State Historical Park in Burwell, NE

Tucked into the beautiful North Loup River Valley at the edge of the Sandhills, Fort Hartsuff is a remarkably well preserved window into Nebraska's frontier past. Built in the 1870s and active as an infantry post until 1881, the fort once patrolled the valley and served as a vital hub for local settlers, farmers, and the Pawnee Tribe. Often called one of the prettiest posts on the plains, it stands today as one of the most complete small prairie forts anywhere.

Because the original buildings were made from a durable local concrete mixture, much of the fort survives, and visitors can wander the parade ground, follow the white picket fence, and step inside structures staged just as they were in the 1870s, filled with period artifacts. Throughout the season the park brings history to life with living history events, artillery and cannon demonstrations, and old time skills like blacksmithing and soap making. With picnicking and a gift shop on site, it makes for an easy and memorable half day stop.
